In this short video, Thich Nhat Hanh responds to the following question;
It hurts me when I hear about animal suffering. I just don’t understand how to get past it. I try to help but feel helpless at times. What can I do?
This is the first time I’ve heard Thich Nhat Hanh talk (it’s May 2014). I really enjoyed his book The Miracle Of Mindfulness and I’ve also really enjoyed hearing him speak here. I love the way he talks about eating in a way to preserve compassion and the notion that so much of our resources are used up to raise animals for eating and for the manufacture of alcohol, while so many people in the world are starving. That did make me stop and think about all those vineyards in the world that are there just so we can enjoy wine. We don’t “need” wine, but we use up resources like soil and water to manufacture it. It’s an interesting thought.
