This is the website of an organization that is trying to build a global movement to reduce the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere back to 350 ppm. This is the level that James Hansen says we must have to restore balance back to the world and to stop the march of global warming. Today (July 2014), the concentration is 401.3 (according to co2now.org). Some scientists say that if this number ever reaches 450 ppm, then there’s no going back.
On the 350.org website, they describe themselves as;
350.org is building a global climate movement. Our online campaigns, grassroots organizing, and mass public actions are coordinated by a global network active in over 188 countries.
350 is a movement more than an organization. We use distributed, grassroots organizing to run adaptive, locally-driven campaigns in every corner of the globe. 350.org’s small team of paid staff supports thousands of grassroots activists running their own independent, loosely affiliated organizations and campaigns in 188 countries.
and they provide this short, no words, video to introduce themselves;
My take is that even before approaching campaigns like these, we need everyone to be accurately aware of the problems and acknowledging the fact that reduced consumption and emission are important initial steps. Reducing consumption is something everyone can do immediately, and we only need to think about reducing consumption by 10% per year (see use10percentless). I’m interested in following and supporting 350.org and hope they can be successful.
