Even though this video is 5 years old, it’s still very interesting and pertinent today. I think I first came across Michael Pollan in the documentary Fresh, and I find him easy to listen to and he appears to make a lot of sense. Here, in this interview at about the 10 minute mark (near the end), he makes the very interesting quote;
“Don’t buy any food you’ve ever seen advertised!”
Some other points are;
- He gives a description of intensive pig farming
- Genetically modified crops don’t raise productivity. They are good for expanding monocultures (also see Rapeseed invasion and monocultures)
- Don’t buy products with high-fructose corn syrup
- Avoid highly processed food
- High-fructose corn syrup is just “a tool of food science”
- Food companies have found that if we sweeten anything we’ll buy more of it
- Then the quote I’ve already mentioned about not buying any food that needs advertising (find this just after the 10 minute mark)
